Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a senior leadership role in a library or related institution. Experience obtained in a health sciences environment is preferred, but academic or special library experience will also be considered.

Overview of Position

The University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine Campus Libraries seeks an energetic, service-oriented and progressive professional to serve as the Head, Medical Sciences Library (MSL). The incumbent serves as a member of the Senior Management Team of the St. Augustine Campus Libraries, and the Executive Committee of the Faculty Medical Sciences (FMS). Working with the Campus Librarian and the Dean, FMS, the incumbent establishes strategic goals and objectives, determines enterprise wide activities and collaborations, interprets and initiates policy, and is responsible for the overall development of the MSL. This leadership position provides unique opportunities for a creative individual to help bring innovation from concept to practice.

Primary Responsibilities

Participating in the development and execution of strategic plans and roadmaps

Working closely with the Campus Librarian and Dean, FMS in library- and university-wide initiatives

Representing the Library on campus committees

Managing recruitment, hiring, orientation, supervision, training, and evaluation of professional and support staff of the MSL

Ensuring the provision of quality services to the FMS, coordinating the assessment and impact of services and developing/recommending new service models or services

Overseeing the development of a core collection of print and online resources

Directing the development of user education programmes and tools to support the evolving curriculum and research of the Faculty

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Librarian of the UTCWI's Library is responsible for the overall management and administration of the library involving the following -:

Collection development and organization.

Development and Delivery of effective public services (e.g., research support for students and faculty and other clients) by providing library and information literacy instruction sessions, or guidance and assistance in using appropriate search strategies to satisfy their religion, theology and other information needs .

Exploitation and introduction of emerging technologies designed to provide effective organization, management and delivery of library services in the modern information environment.

Development of an annual expenditure plan based on collection development goals and the assessment of the library's equipment and other needs.

Preparation, submission and justification of the Library budget, including requests for additional funding that reflect changes to the Library’s academic programs or equipment needs.

Demonstrate knowledge of library work in an increasingly digital environment and offer suggestions as to how emerging technologies may be adapted by UTCWI

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate should possess-:

a) Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Studies with a minimum of three (3) years experience managing or working in a library, OR

b) Master in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) with a minimum of 2 years experience managing or working in a Library, OR

c) Master of Arts in Library and Information Studies (MALIS) AND

d) Knowledge of theological and religious studies and related fields

The United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) is an ecumenical seminary training male and female clergy and laity for Protestant denominations throughout the Caribbean, Founded in 1966, it is located adjacent to University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus . It is affiliated to the University of the West Indies, forming the Department of Theology in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. UTCWI offers eight major academic programmes including certification at the Licentiate, Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degree levels, five of which lead to University of the West Indies awards, two to its own awards, and one offered jointly with Columbia Theological Seminary located in Georgia, USA. It is owned and operated by six (6) Denominations representing, Anglicans ( Diocese of Jamaica & The Cayman Islands) Baptists (The Jamaica Baptist Union), Lutheran,, MCCA ( Methodist Church in the Caribbean and Americas) , Moravian and the United Church in Jamaica and The Cayman Islands

Duties and Responsibilities

The position provides strong leadership and strategic direction in the development and delivery of all technical and technology-related services, and the incumbent has overall responsibility for all aspects of Library collections to support teaching and research, including acquisition, cataloguing, metadata creation, digital initiatives, scholarly communication, and data management.   • Formulate library policies and procedures based on current and emerging trends in academic library operations in keeping with the academic priorities of the Mona Campus
  • Work with Heads of Technical Services and Systems to provide vision, direct and lead in matters to redefine collections, technology use  and , preservation
  • Provide leadership regarding the development of collections in all formats
  • Interpret issues with regards to current trends and developments in library technical services and communicate these to the Campus Librarian
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction in digital initiatives including the  creation  and maintenance of a Digital Centre
  • Develop strategic directions and work closely with relevant Library staff including the Deputy Librarian Public and Outreach Services to ensure coordinated handling of all aspects of technical services and library information systems
  • Plan new projects and activities including new initiatives in Technical and Digital Initiatives
  • Work with the Head  of Systems  for all matters in relation to evaluation  and maintenance of the Integrated Library System
  • Work with the Preservation and Conservation Librarian in the management  of the Bindery,  including income generating activities
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Librarian, Public and Outreach Services, and Special Projects,  regarding disaster and emergency management, and occupational health and safety, and liaise with the safety and security management consultants
  • Assist the Campus Librarian in managing, directing and monitoring the activities of standing and ad hoc committees, teams, etc.

  • Work with Heads of Branches and the Head of Public Services to create and support the execution of traditional and cutting edge services designed to meet the current and future needs of patrons and advance the strategic objectives of the Library
  • Provide vision and leadership for various outreach activities and coordinate the development of a comprehensive marketing and advocacy programme
  • Have primary responsibility for grant-writing, and developing projects and activities including new initiatives
  • Lead in the development of collaborative  Campus partnerships with units, e.g. the Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS), and Mona Office of Research and Innovation (MORI)
  • Interact with internal and external stakeholders with regards to special projects
  • Assist with the supervision of professional staff with respect to hiring, deployment, job descriptions, appraisal, and career development
  • Advise and assist the Campus Librarian in the formulation of strategic direction in relation to facilities  and space management
  • Assist the Campus Librarian in managing, directing and monitoring the activities of standing and ad hoc committees, teams, etc.
